TWO receptions?!?

Actually not uncommon for Bald Head Island weddings, a second reception allows the wedding couple to spend more time with their guests who have traveled to celebrate with them, and lets the guests know that their efforts are most appreciated! We've worked more than one wedding that has had 2 receptions. The one featured below was from Megan and Chris' wedding--they held the ceremony at the chapel and official reception at the lighthouse grounds on a Friday evening. Then on Saturday, they had dinner catered to a rental home, La Vita Bruta, that is available for small receptions. Coastal Catering and Events provided delicious food, and the bride and I worked together to create a casual beach decor to fit her vision for the space.

End of 2010 Season

Well, our first season of weddings has come to an end. The perk of working beach weddings is that there IS an off-season, to allow for much needed breaks and catch up work for the business! This past year was a fantastic learning experience-we met some wonderful people, created both new and stronger relationships with vendors we love, and worked to fine-tune our skills in making weddings on Bald Head Island flow smoothly!

We are looking forward to the 2011 season--a new website will be coming soon, with new photos, testimonials, and an overall face lift. We have already started booking, with our first wedding of the 2011 season on April 16th. Stay tuned!

Stephanie and Will were married on July 10th, 2010 at the Bald Head Island Club. What an inspiration Stephanie was, making all her own floral arrangements and bouquets herself! Her flowers were ordered from Fifty Flowers and delivered to Southport, where she picked them up and brought them to the island to create the arrangements. Many thanks to Gene Ho Photography for the use of these images!

DIY Flowers

At our most recent wedding, the bride ordered her flowers from a wholesaler, Fifty Flowers, and made all arrangements and bouquets herself. This is no small feat on Bald Head Island--she had to order them and get them over to the island, and THEN make the arrangements--all the day before her wedding, so that the flowers were fresh! See her posting about how she did it here.

We strung & hung paper lanterns over her ceremony site, which later flipped to be her dance floor for the reception. Most venues on BHI will not do this for you; you have to hire an outside vendor who has insurance. Just another of the many services A Day at the Beach offers!

What could be more appropriate for Bald Head Island than a Coast Guard wedding?! We at A Day at the Beach spent months planning and designing this one, and were thrilled with the end result. We kept a nautical theme, while working to play up the island's natural beauty. The rehearsal dinner was held at Old Baldy --a simple bbq dinner at sunset, with the wedding ceremony and reception held at the Shoals Club. We were lucky enough to help out with Haley and Marcos' wedding on May 22, 2010! A brunch reception at The Shoals Club provided guests with pancakes, a custom omlette station, and bloody marys. Music by Gene O'Neil created a beautiful ceremony and easygoing reception atmosphere. Arrangements of white flowers from Kim Fisher Designs created a clean, crisp feel throughout the space.

A few comments from the bride:

Jessica provided exactly what I needed leading up to and during the wedding weekend, which was an extra set of (knowledgeable, creative, helpful) hands. Leading up to the wedding Jessica was able to provide insight into some intricacies of BHI weddings that I hadn't thought of and had some creative ideas for working around some issues we had been pondering. She also provided some information on vendors and used her relationships on the island to help get things done. The weekend of the wedding she was right there with everything I needed, reminding me of things that had slipped my mind, shuttling wedding stuff all around the island and running to my house to get my marriage license out of my suitcase when I realized I forgot to bring it to the ceremony. Overall, Jessica was a definite sanity saver for me and my husband. Everything went off without a hitch and I know that wouldn't have happened without her help!

true love

My grandmother is 86 years old. We used to visit her a lot when I was younger, but I don't see her that often now. I was lucky enough to get to spend this past weekend at Bald Head Island with her, and on Sunday morning, sitting on the screen porch, I began asking her questions about her life. I feel like there is so much I don't know about her and her past, but I want to know, and I want to hear it from her.

She began talking about her old house in Yonkers, NY, which I remember visiting as a little kid...a great big sprawling house, with an elaborate staircase. She recalled how she and my grandfather saw the house in the paper, and decided just to drive by. They ended up buying the house, even though to this day she says they couldn't afford it.

I asked her how she and my grandfather met. I've seen their wedding photo--he's in a Navy uniform, and she's in a gorgeous white dress with a train sprawling in front of them, but I've never heard any stories. Despite being 86, she is sharp as a tack, and remembers details about her life from high school. I have trouble remembering what I did yesterday.

She was at a dance with her girlfriend, and my grandfather and his friend approached them. He recognized her from seeing her around town, and they had mutual friends, but she didn't know who he was. He asked if he could walk her home, and she declined--her explanantion when telling me the story was, "you know how fellas are, pain in the ass, coming up on the stoop, asking when they can see you again." So long story short, they went on a date 3 weeks later. She wasn't sure she would even remember what he looked like! He joined the Merchant Marines and then the Navy, and every time he came home on leave, he asked my grandmother to marry him. She told him he was crazy, they had no money, and would never survive. He set out to make some money, and they agreed the next time he had some leave, they would get married. Little did I know that fabulous wedding picture was from a wedding that was put together in 3 days, with a dress borrowed from her sister-in-law.

She began recalling their honeymoon, and when telling the story of their adventures in Atlantic City, she began laughing so hard that she began to cry. My grandfather passed away 20 years ago in April, and the memories of him still bring tears to her eyes. This is the kind of love we all dream of, the kind that lasts forever, no matter how long the other person has been gone.

What a special, simple thing love was then. Today's world is so busy that often times people forget what's important. Still in love after being alone for 20 years? Now THAT'S true love.
